LEARN MOREBecause the brand has been around for so many years, by the 60s, Ethan Allen already boasted around 1,600 pieces, including Ethan Allen dining tables, Ethan Allen dressers, and of course, Ethan Allen sofas. These early pieces from years and years ago are part of the icon collection, also known as the Circa 1776 collection.
What are some of the hallmarks of the Ethan Allen Circa 1776 collection? This collection in particular is known for it’s Amber colored Mable wood pieces such as its roomy dresser drawers, table surfaces, etc. This collection also has amazing beds and console tables. If you're an antique furniture lover, this collection is absolutely for you.
Because if it’s popularity, there are replicas of these Ethan Allen furniture pieces, so if you're wondering if the piece you’re eying is real, we’re here to help make sure you’re shopping savvy! If you’re looking at an Ethan Allen sofa, look for it’s company stamp, which should be marked on the back or the bottom of the furniture. For pieces like Ethan Allen dressers, Ethan Allen Desks, or consoles, take a look at the furniture piece's drawers (this is normally where the Ethan Allen factory mark is located!). PS, fun fact, like many other great brands, Ethan Allen went through a few name changes before it settled on the one we know and love, so if you see Baumritter Corporation, Green Mountain Holding Corporations or Interco, know that you’ve still go the real deal!
If we haven’t shoved enough Ethan Allen Furniture history down your throat, another cool thing about the company is that they really spiked in popularity around the Great Depression. With so many business struggling to stay afloat, Ethan Allen really had to tune into what their customers wanted and what their tastes were. They realized that a lot of customers who were particularly cost-conscious preferred buying furniture rather than small home goods, so that became the company’s focus. Modern furniture design hadn’t been introduced to Americans yet, thus the company produced traditionalist style furniture. This meant tons of maple, oak, and cherry wood furniture pieces. This American Revivalist style led to the company’s growth, however, they were smart to adapt and branch past these styles as consumers tastes changed. They produced some designs outside of the signature Ethan Allen style furniture, with their American Dimensions collection.
The American Dimensions collection from Ethan Allen sports bleached wood furniture, more geometric designs, really changing the game for the brand. They also introduced the Ethan Allen Legacy collection, which took design a step further, taking notes from Italian furniture designers. The company continued to show it's ability to adapt to changing times and tastes when it launched its American Impression collection, when artistic styles became the focus in the 1990s.
