About Mardi Gras Masks: Mardi Gras is a holiday celebration that lasts from January 6th of each year until the day before Ash Wednesday, 40 days prior to Easter Sunday. Masks have been a major part of the Mardi Gras festivities for as long as it has been celebrated. Masks have been a part of Mardi Gras since the early 1700s; however, from the 1780s to 1827, masks were forbidden during the celebrations. The original purpose of Mardi Gras masks was to protect the identity of revelers, men who went door to door to sing, dance and beg for offerings to make a communal gumbo. Today, Mardi Gras masks are worn by "Krewes" (the term for party organizers) to protect the identity of Krewe members, and by revelers and ball attendees. Traditionally, Mardi Gras masks contain three colors: gold, green and purple. The Krewe of Rex revealed the meaning of the colors in 1892: gold signifies power, green equals faith and purple represents justice. According to Louisiana State University-Eunice, these include conical, dunce-style hats, animal masks that often feature real fur, and mitres made to mimic clerical officials’ headgear. Mardi Gras masks are traditionally built on a wire or plastic frame; the materials vary greatly from plastic to cardboard to feathers. More decorative Mardi Gras masks are usually made of ceramic or porcelain such as the ones being sold here.
