Seller's Notes:A Key Piece of Mid-century Modern Design Eero Saarinen together with Charles Eames developed the first designs for furniture made from moulded plywood. In 1940, they submitted the Organic Chair as a joint entry to the “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, later winning for their innovative approach. Close examination of this chair drew attention to its functional quality and timeless aesthetic. This recognition sparked the idea of a re-edition of the chair, launched by Vitra in 2004 after production was haulted due to war efforts. Material Description: Seat Shell: Laminated Upholstery: Polyurethane foam with fabric cover. Fabric: Cosy 2 (10 Classic Grey) is a high-quality milled woollen cloth with a warm character. The fabric offers thermal comfort and excellent durability, making it suited for upholstered furniture in office settings as well as residential applications. Material: new wool: 80%, polyamide: 20% Abrasion resistance: 50,000 Martindale Fastness to light: Type 6 Fastness to rubbing: Grade 4–5 dry and wet Pilling: Grade 4–5 Legs: Black ash Glides: Fitted with plastic guides for carpet Origin of wood: Oak (Quercus robur) and ash (Fraxinus excelsior) from Western Europe and/or Poland Original Price: 3,600 *PLEASE NOTE: Some of the fabric has slight discoloration, the right inner arm has a fold in the fabric, and the wooden legs have some scuffing from use overtime (documented best in images 4-6) These factors were considered in the pricing of the piece.* Purchased from Vitra in 2013

Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen created the Organic Chair in 1940 as part of their entry for 'Organic Design in Home Furnishings', a competition organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The small reading chair offers superb comfort, thanks to its comfortably upholstered, biomorphically shaped seat shell, and is also available in a version with a higher backrest: Organic Highback.
