Product details
Seller's Notes:Get this table in time for your holiday dinners! Vintage expandable wood dining table and five matching chairs, including four side chairs and one arm chair. 45 inches by 60 inches, expandable up to 45x84 with four 6” inches. Add as many or as few of the leaves as you like, for flexibility to accommodate your space and your number of diners. It can comfortably seat six people when at its smallest, 10 when fully expanded. We’ve squeezed in 12. (We supplemented the matching chairs with walnut folding chairs; we are keeping those.) Pick it up in Brooklyn Heights in an elevator building. We bought our dining table at an antique store back in Michigan more than 20 years ago, and brought it with us when we moved to New York 16 years ago. We had the chairs professionally tightened and wood glued to make them sturdier, and reupholstered them with beautiful floral fabric. We have the chair seats professionally steam cleaned annually. The dark walnut finish shows the wear of being used regularly. We are the rare New Yorkers who cook at home and host dinner parties. This set has enjoyed being well loved and well cared for. We keep a tablecloth on it so we’ve never minded that the surface has imperfections. We haven’t restained it or polished it because it’s always covered. Some of the leaves are a little warped, but still fit in place. Adding a table pad could help create a smoother surface, if you like. We have just considered it part of the character of an antique table. The table locks closed, and releasing the lock easily opens it up to add as many or few of the leaves as you need. We bought tablecloths for three different sizes because it offers flexibility for various needs from routine weeknight dinners and big, rowdy celebrations. A label under the table identifies it as manufactured by C.F. Schmoe Furniture Co. of Shelbyville, Indiana, and typed in is the recipient it was shipped to: E.J. Foster of Grass Lake, Michigan. We’ve Googled up Edward J. Foster, who died in 1937 at age ~76, so the table is easily 100 years old. We chose this table because we didn’t want anything too precious. We wanted our guests to feel relaxed enjoying themselves. Within weeks of first bringing it home in Ann Arbor, a friend knocked over a full martini on it, and we considered that its christening, like smashing a bottle of Champagne on a ship. Make your home the next to make memories around it.
