Seller's Notes:A well-made Hepplewhite spider back armchair in solid mahogany presenting the full ornamental vocabulary of the style: continuous oval back crest, pierced radiating spider web lattice with carved rosette at center and at each major intersection, fluted arm supports with carved rosette terminals, serpentine seat rail, and tapered square legs with spade feet. The carving is crisp and well-executed throughout. The seat is upholstered in a warm paisley fabric in sage and cream. The Hepplewhite spider back is one of the most recognized and collected chair formats in the English Georgian and American Federal tradition. Quality late 20th-century reproductions by makers such as Kindel, Maitland-Smith, Henkel Harris, and Councill command strong secondary market interest.
