Seller's Notes:A striking pair of mid-century modern walnut nightstands in the sculptural manner of Vladimir Kagan's work for United Furniture — one of the most admired and collected strains of American 1960s case goods design. Unmarked but clearly operating at the premium end of domestic production, these cabinets combine a brass grid inlay door panel with a dramatically arched sculptural base on splayed legs with domed brass feet. The result is a pair of nightstands that functions equally as furniture and as design objects. Each door features a recessed walnut panel with a precise three-by-three grid of brass inlay lines — warm gold against rich brown grain — creating a geometric decorative motif that is both refined and boldly graphic. The original small round brass knob at center completes the door hardware. Below an open display platform, the sculptural base presents four splayed tapered legs emerging from an arched apron, each terminating in a domed brass foot — the characteristic Kagan-influenced silhouette that gives these pieces their architectural lift and presence. The interiors are fitted with an adjustable shelf and are clean and well-preserved. The walnut exterior grain is warm and consistent throughout both pieces. Solid, stable construction with no structural issues. These work beautifully as nightstands flanking a bed, as end tables in a living room, or as side cabinets in a study or entry. The scale is generous enough to be functional and refined enough to hold their own in a serious interior. Pieces of this quality without maker's labels are common among 1960s American furniture — many quality producers worked directly for interior designers and the residential trade without standard retail labeling. The design vocabulary is confidently in the Kagan / United Furniture tradition and the execution supports that attribution.
