Spanish Carved Armoire - Apostles & Angels
Product details
Seller's Notes:This remarkable and heavy Spanish Colonial armoire is a museum-worthy example of sacred ecclesiastical furniture, profusely carved and paint-decorated (polychromed) on all visible sides. Rich in religious symbolism and iconography, it may have once served a functional role in monastic confessions or ceremonial use, as evidenced by an opening in the back panel. Front Panels The double doors feature four masterfully hand-carved angels, each richly polychromed. The upper angels stand in solemn prayer, hands clasped at the heart—symbols of reverence and intercession. The lower angels cradle orbs (representing Earth) in one hand while shielding them with mantles in the other—a powerful image of celestial guardianship. Side Panels Left Side: A full-length depiction of Saint John the Apostle, shown with a quill and the Holy Scriptures, symbolizing divine authorship and spiritual vision. Right Side: Another robed Apostle holds the Holy Scriptures in one hand and Jacob’s Ladder in the other—a reference to the mystical bridge between Earth and Heaven, interpreted as Christ himself in early Christian theology.
